Gold spot price is an important reference point for the wholesale gold market.
However, spot price should not automatically be interpreted as the exact amount a dealer will pay for every physical gold product.
Physical bullion markets have their own bids, premiums, discounts and transaction costs, and those conditions can change as supply and demand change.
Actual Gold Content
We determine the amount of gold represented by the coin or bar.
Different products may contain different weights and purities of gold, even when their overall physical weight appears similar.
Mint or Refiner
Recognizable products from established sovereign mints and respected refiners may trade differently from unfamiliar or difficult-to-authenticate products.
The manufacturer does not guarantee a particular value, but product recognition and liquidity can matter in the physical bullion market.
Current Market Demand

Gold Spot Price vs. the Price of Physical Gold
One of the most common questions bullion sellers have is why the price quoted for a physical coin or bar may differ from the gold spot price they see online.
Spot price is a benchmark for gold itself. Physical coins and bars are actual products that must be authenticated, purchased, held and eventually resold into the bullion market.
Depending on current conditions, a particular bullion product can trade above or below the underlying reference price.
For example, a widely recognized sovereign gold coin may have a different wholesale market than a generic one-ounce bar, even though both contain approximately one ounce of gold.

Should Gold Coins Be Sold as Bullion or Collectible Coins?
Not every gold coin should automatically be treated only as bullion.
Some older U.S. and world gold coins may have potential collector or numismatic characteristics in addition to their precious-metal content.

A common-date bullion coin and a scarce collectible gold coin require different considerations.
If you're unsure whether your coins are primarily bullion or potentially collectible, do not clean, polish or alter them before having them examined.
Do You Buy Graded Gold Coins?
Yes. Joseph Diamonds can evaluate gold coins certified by established third-party grading services as well as raw, uncertified coins.
A grading holder does not automatically make a coin more valuable than its gold content. The specific coin, grade, rarity and current collector market still need to be considered.
If you have certified coins, leave them in their existing holders.
Gold Bars in Assay Packaging
Many modern gold bars are sold in sealed assay packaging that identifies information such as the refiner, weight, purity and serial number.
If your bars remain in their original assay packaging, we generally recommend leaving the packaging intact.
Do not open a sealed bar simply to inspect it before your appointment.
If the packaging has already been opened or damaged, that does not necessarily mean the gold has no value. Bring the bar and any packaging you still have so we can examine it.
